After the success of the Rituals EP, which was really based on the popularity of Call It Love, WEA decided to release the Gary Wright produced Hands and Hearts album. WEA also decided to add the remixed Call It Love and Save It to this album, ironically taking the two songs they had rejected as singles from Rituals and making them the band's next two singles.
As with Rituals, the band raised money in order to fix up the album. One new song, King's Service, rejected by Gary Wright for the album (as were Call It Love and Save It), was recorded in February 1985. King’s Service replaced one of the Gary Wright produced songs, Give Us Another Day, which eventually showed up on Skinny Puppy's Remission in a substantially different form. King’s Service was Kevin’s last studio recording with IIV. Vocals were redone on Holiday, Promised Land, and In The House, which were then remixed by Dave Ogilvie. Another Gary Wright produced song, Set Me Free, was dropped from the album (The demo version of this song is Peculiar, which appears on Evolution). The Gary Wright tracks Rescue Me and One Way Heart were remixed. Awaken Me was the only track from the Gary Wright sessions left as it was. However, WEA wanted one more track on the album, now renamed In The House. While the band tried reworking Talking to Myself, time was running out. Dale was unhappy with the vocals, so Ed quickly wrote new lyrics which he ended up singing. Talking to Myself became the tenth track on In The House.
