BH&H RECORDS-THE INDEPENDENT RELEASES:
JUNE-OCTOBER 1982

The Pre-release 7" EP.

Since no suitable record deal had been offered, the band decided to release some of the finished tracks on their own label. Taking inspiration from Riuchi Sakamoto's (of YMO) Riot In Lagos 12" sleeve, the band decided to make their first release look like a limited edition "pre-release" radio-only record. Breaking Up became the first Images In Vogue single, backed with For Germans and Politics of Sound. Only 500 copies were pressed, and many were sent to college radio stations across Canada and the US, where it got lots of play.

By this time, the band had become good friends with Glen Nelson, who had left e and was working on his own solo project. When the band went back into Mushroom to record two new songs, Educated Man and She's A Garden, Glen was there. He liked what he heard and asked the band to produce his upcoming recording. Meanwhile, that July Glen had been asked to open for Duran Duran at the Commodore. He asked Joe to mix sound and Gary to do lights.

Soon after, in August 1982 , IIV went on its first road trip to Edmonton to play at a club called Scandals. Glen was brought along as opening act and to do lights, while Lindsay came as sound man and Dave Ogilvie did stage sound. Many strange things happened on this trip. Gary's car blew up outside Cache Creek B.C., and most of the band had to travel the rest of the way to Edmonton on a Greyhound bus while Joe, Dale, Don, and Dave were crammed into the front of the truck. The strangest thing of all was that when the band arrived at the club, they were told that they would be on a double bill with blues singer/guitarist Long John Baldry. Not only that, but the evening would have five sets: opener Glen Nelson, then IIV, then Long John, then IIV again, then Long John again! Newspaper reviews called the "experiment" a success, but those were definitely IIV's weirdest gigs. Coincidentally, the band playing at the other new music club in Edmonton came over for a visit. Called The Instructions, the group featured Ed Shaw on guitar and Derrick Gyles on drums.

It was on this road trip that the decision to add Glen Nelson to the line-up was made, but it raised the question of how this might change Don's role in the band, since Glen was a guitarist as well as a keyboard player. This was the start of a conflict which would eventually result in Don leaving the band.

That fall the band worked on new material with Glen. At the same time, another EP was put together, using the new two tracks recorded during the summer as well as two more of the left over album tracks and a remix of Breaking Up. In early October 1982, the band performed at the Luv-a-Fair for the third time, this time with Glen in the line-up. They debuted a new song, Lust For Love, at these shows.

To promote the release of the Educated Man EP, IIV appeared on the Vancouver Show for the first of three times, playing Breaking Up and Educated Man. The live performance of Breaking Up became IIV's first official video.
